When I was 10 years old we got our first TV set, not because my parents needed more entertainment, but because a family friend gave it to my dad. The only reason he wanted to get near a TV set was to find out “how” it worked. He had already disassembled a few of them to discover what made it work. He was also a ham radio operator conversing with people all over the world and we had a big towering antenna attached to our house to bring in the signals.
A quick search of my zip code let me know that there are still lots of ham radio conversations going on right here is the Savage area where I live now.
Opposites attract, as they say and mom was a creative artist whose lovely sweet decorated cake designs were the centerpiece of many of weekend weddings. I seemed to take after her, and most of my default interests had to do with artistic design.
However in my late 50’s I started to think about the fact that I was my father daughter as well. When I found myself needing to find a second job, I began to focus on computers and decided to learn web design. In a consultation at the local technical school, I was told that I needed to start by learning the basic codes of html and css. The class was full of young people and the teacher and I were the only older folks in the class, but I loved it! I had forgotten how much fun it was to learn something new that really challenged my brain. The learning was stimulating the most under used areas of my brain and it was LOTS of work.
I thought, “My dad would have loved this stuff!” I knew he would have been proud of the 4.0 grade point I earned during that period. Now I learn on-line at my own pace at Lynda.com.
My days as a full time student are over, but the joy and value learning will never stop. Here’s the thing… Once it’s inside my head, I OWN it.
