As we get older, there is a natural drift toward isolation. Senior men and women begin to feel marginalized as their world shrinks and the choices are not as wide open as they were in the past. So how can we find meaning and purpose for our lives during the final season? How can we invest ourselves during the final season?
We live our lives forward, but we understand them by looking backward. In looking back, we can identify turning points or dynamic events and remember the places where the darkness of some long-term problem became a clear path for our feet to walk, if only for one day at a time.
Take some time to clarify and organize our thinking about life, make sense of events, and enrich the meaning of your life story. If we make meaning as older adults by shaping memories, we see how the story of our life has turned out – then change what we can for the future and accept the rest.
I would suggest one more step. Find a younger person that is living in the storm of life right now that you have lived in the past. There are no NEW problems, just recycled ones! The storm you have successfully navigated could be of great value to some younger person who needs and wants an understanding mentor.
Investing yourself for the new generation is the way to pay it forward.
