Retirement Ahead

Retirement Ahead for Minnesota Marion

I will retire from my position as Resident Manager of Banfill Crossing in mid April of 2017.

I will retire from my position as Resident Manager of Banfill Crossing in mid April of 2017.  A search for my replacement is under way and I love thinking about handing off this terrific job to someone else knowing that I have developed order and structured organization into this setting.  Great Lakes Management Company has provided a fantastic working environment and I am so thankful for these last 6 years.

My job is “on the market” and everything I own is being stored or sold. I am lightening the load and the ground is shrinking as I move to a place of further dependence on the Lord of my life. Continue reading

Care

From that hour the disciple took her into his own [household].

When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own [household].

John 19:25-27 (NASB)  … But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”  Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!”  From that hour the disciple took her into his own [household].  (NASB)

The eyes of the Lord Jesus, through dirty sweat and crusted blood fell upon the figure of His distressed mother who was standing close to John, the disciple whom He loved.  He could see her suffering and He cared and He understood completely.

What was she thinking about?  Was she recalling the words of the angel Gabriel who told her that her body was to be the dwelling place of a child who was the Son of God?  Was she feeling less that blessed among women as she realized that she would not be spared the deliverance of her Son as Abraham had been?  She would have to endure the sacrificial death of the Son of promise, her Son… Jesus. Gambling

Gambling destroys the work ethic. The core values of the work ethic are all part of the free enterprise system. Gambling corrupts these values and replaces them with greed and selfishness. Rather than depending upon hard work, gamblers depend instead upon luck and chance.

“I hate casinos!” was my not at all wimpy comment while my coworker replied in like manner….. “I love casinos!”  We were not developing an argument, but clearly our opinions were far apart when it came to the issue of gambling.

It got me thinking……….  Why am I so opposed to gambling?

Go to any casino and you’ll see many gray heads at the slot machines and blackjack tables. Gambling has become a popular pastime for seniors who often have time to spare and holes in their lives to fill. Gambling, like many things in life, can become addictive and seniors who are bored or lonely may be more vulnerable to addictive behaviors. Continue reading

The God Walk

Here’s the thing… It is never too late to develop a personal walk with God and old age is as good a time as any to begin.

Here’s the thing… It is never too late to develop a personal walk with God and old age is as good a time as any to begin.

I grew up in the early 50’s and my parents like many of their friends believed in making it a practice to attend church as a family.  For them, church was a core item in our home and not an addendum that would be discarded by other distractions.  Quite the opposite… Other distractions were discarded or never considered on the basis of what they were learning and becoming as a result of their devotion to personal growth in their faith walk with God. Defensive Strategy

Sometimes it is necessary to “go into the game fighting” so to speak, but most of the time the issue at hand I not a big deal.

Sometimes it is necessary to “go into the game fighting” so to speak, but most of the time the issue at hand I not a big deal.

Football season in here and grandparents are often making sure they are in the stands to cheer for the young people who are “in the game”.

As aging people, living in close proximity to a variety of people, we need to choose a position as well in the games of life that play out all around us each day.   We can choose to play “defensively” when an offensive comment or encounter is hurled our way, seemingly from out of nowhere. Cut To The Core

You’ve seen it happen. When life circumstances cut you down, what’s really “under the hood” shows up and sometimes it is pretty ugly.

You’ve seen it happen. When life circumstances cut you down, what’s really “under the hood” shows up and sometimes it is pretty ugly.

You’ve heard the saying… “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”.  True or not, it is my practice to eat an apple every day.  Recently, I noticed that the top was showing some spoiling, so I thought, “I’ll just cut that part off and eat the rest.  When I cut off the part that was visibly offensive, I found that the whole thing was rotten to the core with only the surface areas appearing to be yet unspoiled.  It was clear, that given a few more days, even in the refrigerator, the whole apple would have been spoiled. My Story

I wrote my own story in 500 words, making sure I did not leave out the failures and mistakes that were also part of the tapestry of my life so far.

I wrote my own story in 500 words, making sure I did not leave out the failures and mistakes that were also part of the tapestry of my life so far.

No matter how old I feel, I know that I am in the final quarter of the game.  There is a lot of living left, but I think often about what I want to leave behind for the people I love.  The essence of connection to other people is “being known” and I want those I love to know who I am and what I am about.

Obviously, I will leave behind all my stuff and whatever money I have accumulated, but what I really want to leave is the ideas and beliefs that have driven everything along the way.  Continue reading

Eternal Value

This new venture with my son has me thinking about the importance of investing in the spiritual lives of children and in their character development. This morning I heard a speaker say... “Professional success without a successor is failure.”

This new venture with my son has me thinking about the importance of investing in the spiritual lives of children and in their character development. This morning I heard a speaker say... “Professional success without a successor is failure.”

Recently my youngest son asked me to join him on Sunday mornings for the whole summer to teach the bible to young children who are 6 and 7 years old. I was thrilled to say yes! Our teaching team will get together each Saturday morning for the summer season to eat breakfast together and to and plan for the next days lesson. Although I do not know all the adult who will be on the team as yet, I am looking forward to the whole process.

We will focus on the life of a Peter, one of the disciples of Jesus who began as a fisherman and became a great spiritual leader whose influence has impacted generations. Continue reading

Change is Hard

The fire started in the kitchen which is often the case in apartment living for seniors who for a variety of reasons find the kitchen to be less manageable as they age.

I know a woman whose home was damaged in an accidental fire. The fire started in the kitchen which is often the case in apartment living for seniors who for a variety of reasons find the kitchen to be less manageable as they age. Independent living including the regular tasks of housekeeping can create fire hazards as we age. In this case, cloth items were on top of the stove. While emergency personal were taking her out of the apartment for a medical need, the stove was inadvertently turned on resulting in the fire which started while no one was at home. Continue reading

Marriage

It is beautiful to see and hear from lovers who are still devoted to one another after 50 years together.

It is beautiful to see and hear from lovers who are still devoted to one another after 50 years together.

My son in-laws parents celebrated 50 years together today as family, friends and coworkers gathered to congratulate and honor this much-loved couple. We heard the same songs that were part of their original wedding ceremony and ate a copy of the wedding cake that was part of their first special day together.  I for one enjoyed looking at all the posted pictures of Paula and Jim’s family over the years.

All three of their sons have families of their own now, and each one was introduced including all the children which included new baby. Continue reading
